Warriors win Brexten Green Memorial
CASHION FINISHES 3RD
Easton Roby threw a complete game while Jett Mueggenborg and Ethan Kirby delivered big RBIs as Okarche brought home the title from the Brexten Green Memorial Tournament in Cashion over the weekend.
The championship has some luster for Class A-I’s top-ranked team.
The Warriors beat perennial contender Silo, one of the top teams in Class 3A, 4-2 in the championship.
The field also featured Cashion (ranked second in 2A-I), Colbert (third in 2AI), Calumet (first in B) and Christian Heritage (seventh in 2A-I).
Silo knocked off Cashion 10-6 in the semifinals to earn its spot in the championship game. Okarche came back from a 5-0 deficit to down Calumet 8-5, its second win over the Chieftains this season.
The Rebels are led by former Cashion coach Eddie Jeffcoat and were 14-2 entering the title game.
An error and a groundout allowed the Rebels to plate a run on Roby in the bottom of the first.
The Warriors tied it up in the top of the second on Kirby’s RBI single.
They took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Colin Hendrickson drove home Brett Carnott.
The Rebels tied it up in the fifth before Mueggen-borg and Kirby drove in runs in the sixth.
Roby allowed just four hits over his seven innings. He struck out three batters without a walk.
Okarche had eight hits, three of them from the bat of Hendrickson.
The Warriors scored all eight of their runs against Calumet in the bottom of the fifth inning…and all of them came with two outs.
Down 5-0 and after the first two batters were retired, Roby got a two-out double to start the rally. After a walk put two batters on base, Jake Henderson made it a 5-3 game with a home run to left field.
Hendrickson followed with a double and scored on Mueggenborg’s single.
Mueggenborg tied the game on Lane Rother’s single three batters later.
With the bases still full, Luke Hill doubled home three runs for an 8-5 Okarche lead.
Hill was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. He was joined by Roby, Hendrickson, Mueggenborg and Kirby in collecting two hits.
Hill also got the win with five innings of work. He gave up six hits, five runs, three earned runs and struck out five.
Cody Endres gave up just one hit in the final two innings.
After dropping the semifi nal to Silo, Cashion came back Saturday to beat Calumet 10-5 for third place.
Down 4-3 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats erupted for seven runs to take command.
That included an RBI single off the bat of Brody Nichols and two-run singles from Ryder Lykins and Garet McKeever.
Kyle Yowell finished up the scoring with an RBI single for a 10-4 lead.
McKeever hurled the final 2 1/3 innings of relief to grab the win.
He allowed one hit, one earned run and struck out a pair.
Lykins pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up six hits, four earned runs and also struck out four.
Yowell and Ryker Johnson each had two hits for Cashion, which collected 10 as a team.
McKeever drove in 2 runs and scored 3 runs.
Yowell and Lykins each had 2 RBIs.
Cashion was 11-3 at the conclusion of the tournament.
Okarche added a 10-2 win over Class B No. 4 Dover on the road Monday to improve to 14-2.
Roby was 2 for 3 with a solo home run and tworun double in the game. He scored twice. Sam Kroener had 3 hits for the Warriors.
Grady Terrell pitched four innings, gave up six hits, two earned runs and struck out three to garner the win.
