Kingfisher was led by a senior in placing third in its opening cross country meet of the season.

Running on her home course, Mattie Slezickey placed 10th out of more than 80 runners Saturday at the Kingfisher Cross Country Meet.

Slezickey ran the mile trek in 6:18.47 and was ninth among runners scoring points for their teams.

KHS notched 98 points in the meet.

Weatherford won the team title with just 37 points while Okeene was second with 64.

“It was a good start to the season and we’re ready to make some improvements,” said caoch Stefan Seifried, speaking of both the KHS girls and boys teams.

The Jackets were sixth in their team standings with 164 points.

They were paced by junior Chance Dunn, who was 29th out of 101 runners.

The high school boys ran two miles and Dunn crossed in 12:01.49.

He was 21st among scoring runners.

Also scoring for the boys were Kurttis Mark at 38th (24th), Avery Burgess 68th (32nd), Cohen Wallace 88th (43rd) and Aiden Marshall 89th (44th).

Hinsley Brodrick finished strong for the KHS girls and worked her way into the top 20.

She finished in 6:36.11, which was good for 19th overall and 16th among scorers.

Kingfisher’s three other scorers belonged to Kellyn Young at 32nd (22nd), Ryann Farrar at 33rd (23rd) and Rylee Long-Bush at 41st (28th).

“The first meet of the season is always an unknown and a great benchmark,” Seifried said. “We have to come together and start running like a group and I’m looking to see improvement this week at Weatherford.”

The teams will compete Saturday at the annual Sand Plum Invitational at Rader Park.

The boys will again run two miles while the high school girls will run a 1.5mile course.
