Dover dumps Sweetwater for district title
Dover’s quest to get back to the state baseball tournament began Thursday with a district championship.
The fourth-ranked Longhorns thumped visiting Sweetwater 8-0 and 12-0 to sweep a best-of-three series in their Class B district.
The wins advanced Dover to this week’s regional tournament, which they’ll likely host.
Trypp Lack tossed a one-hitter in the first game of the day, which went six innings before being called by the run rule.
It took Dover’s offense a few innings to get rolling as it only led 2-0 through four innings.
Those runs came off a John Browning double in the second inning.
Dover didn’t score again until the fifth when it plated four runs.
That came despite only two hits, one of them an RBI single off the bat of Ivan Ruiz.
Lack added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and Brennan Fletcher ended it with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Kyler Williams.
Fletcher, Ruiz and Browning had two hits apiece for the Longhorns.
Lack struck out 11 and walked three.
Only one Bulldog reached second base in the game.
Casen Buck didn’t allow a hit over the three innings and struck out eight batters in the nightcap.
It only went three innings.
Dover scored seven runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the third.
Brennan Fletcher was 2 of 3 with 2 RBIs. Trypp Lack also drove in two runs and Daxx Compton led off the third with a solo home run.
Dover is 20-5 after the district title.
Regional sites and pairings should be announced by the OSSAA early this week.
