Dover “picked on” some cross country schools closer to its own size and came away with some extra hardware.

Bly Frieouf won for the third time this season and five Longhorns were among the top 20 Saturday as they claimed the North Rock Creek Heartland Championship team title for schools Class 3A and below.

Dover notched just 42 points to edge Southwest Covenant by five points.

Frieouf dominated the field in Dover’s first 5,000 meter race of the season.

The senior, running on the course where he claimed the Class A state championship a year ago, finished in 17:00.34.

That was a full 24.27 seconds faster than the runner-up, Landon Hubert of Prague.

Southwest Covenant’s Ian Ortiz was third and didn’t cross until more than 1:14 after Frieouf.

From there, it was a battle between Longhorns and Patriots, who entered the race ranked third and fifth, respectively, in the initial Class A rankings of the season.

Carter Dennis of SW Covenant was next as he finished fourth, but two Longhorns crossed before another Patriot did so.

The first was Reid Frieouf, who was sixth overall in 18:55.78. He counted fifth among runners scoring points for their teams.

Brady Reese was the next Longhorn as he placed eighth(seventh)in19:26.41.

The Patriots’ Aden Foret was 10th (ninth) as they were keeping within striking distance of Dover.

Nick Spradlin out-sprinted SW Covenant’s Colton Sheppard to the line and finished 12th (11th), one second and one spot ahead of Sheppard.

That left it to each team’s fifth-place runner.

Dover had a four-point lead through their top four runners.

That gave the Longhorns a bit of a cushion, but they didn’t need it as Kyler Williams finished 20th (18th), one spot ahead of the fifth Patriot runner.

The Longhorns had been second in each of their previous two meets at Kingfisher and Watonga. Both times they were bested by Weatherford, which is currently ranked sixth in Class 4A.

Matching Frieouf in going 3-for-3 in first place finishes was Dover’s Hunter Spradlin.

He won the junior high boys race at North Rock Creek.

Spradlin completed the 2,400 meter course in 8:35.46, which was more than 22 seconds faster than the runner-up.
