Hagen Copeland caught seven passes last Friday as Hennessey evened its record with a 33-14 win on the road against Christian Heritage Academy.

Four of those passes were from Levi Ferrell, including a 15-yard touchdown in the second quarter that saw the Eagles build up an 18-0 lead.

Three were thrown by Jarren Herrera, the Crusaders’ quarterback.

It was that kind of night for the Eagles as they largely dominated both sides of the ball for their second straight win and won their District 2A-II-1 opener.

The Eagles collected 27 first downs, racked up more than 370 yards of offense and held their hosts under 200 total yards.

Our kids played really well,” head coach Mark Cox said as his team moved to 2-2. “Our offensive linemen controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the game, our backs all ran hard and we were efficient in the passing game.

“Defensively, our kids ran to the ball really well and forced several turnovers.”

Those were all attributed to Copeland, who also was one of the team leaders with seven tackles.

Hennessey dominated the first half with three scores.

Mario Lopez had a 6-yard TD reception and Ferrell ran it in from a yard out prior to Copeland’s TD catch.

CHA did open the second half with a touchdown to cut its deficit to 18-7, but Hennessey answered right back.

Ferrell scored on a 10--yard TD run and threw a two-point conversion pass to Copeland to push the margin to 26-7.

When the Crusaders added a touchdown in the fourth, Hennessey again clapped back.

Ferrell capped a drive with yet another TD run, this one from 3 yards away.

“That was huge to close the door on them like that each time they started to mount some momentum,” said Cox on his team answering CHA scores with scores of their own. “Our guys didn’t get rattled when CHA scored. They just kept fighting, kept the ball away from CHA on long drives and ended those drives in touchdowns.”

The Eagles totaled 240 rushing yards.

Ferrell accounted for 122 and the three touchdowns on 30 attempts.

Lopez added 57 yards on just eight carries while Alex Gonzalez managed 54 more yards on 11 attempts.

Ferrell was also 13 of 15 through the air for 131 yards and two TDs.

Copeland’s catches totaled 43 yards.

Brytan Gardner also had four receptions as they went for 28 yards.

Jameson Ladwig led the team with nine stops. Gardner added eight while Lopez joined Copeland in totaling seven.

The loss was CHA’s first as it dropped to 3-1 and 0-1.

The Eagles host Millwood this week. Like Hennessey, the Falcons are 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the district after their 62-8 win last week against Newkirk.
