KHS players, coach earn top soccer honors

Kingfisher’s soccer teams gathered one last time toward the end of the school year for a joint banquet.

It was announced during the banquet that four KHS players and one coach had earned All-State honors for the season.

Named to the Oklahoma Soccer Coaches Association’s Class 3A West All-State team for the boys were seniors Rhett Schlegel and Abel Guzman as midfielders and Elijah Click as a goalkeeper.

The KHS girls’ lone senior - Harper Evans - also earned a spot on the 3A West All-State team as a midfielder.

The Class 3A All-State games are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at Catoosa High School.

Coaching the 3A West boys will be Kingfisher’s Isaac Waltman, who just finished his fifth season at the helm of the Jackets.

Players voted by coaches to the 3A-2 All-District team were also announced.

Earning the honor for the boys were forwards Eduardo De La Torre and Jamie Rivera, defenders Chris Orozco and Diego Valles and midfielder R.J. McCarty.

Lady Jackets voted 3A-2 All-District were midfielder/defender Jennings Brodle, forward/ goalkeeper Yesenia Rivera, midfielder Gisselle Ponce, defender Tanisha Mercado and forward Maya Haney.

Waltman also announced team awards at the banquet.

Presented honors were:

•Eduardo De La Torre – Top Goal Scorer and Varsity Offensive Player of the Year

• Elijah Click – Varsity Defensive Player of the Year

• Abel Guzman – Team Leader in Assists

• Kyle Meadors – JV Offensive MVP

• Reyse Jackson – JV Defensive MVP Girls coach Aniessa Edsall announced awards for her team:

• Aubree East – Padawan Award (Underclassman who is coachable and willing to learn)

• Gisselle Ponce – “Don’t You Dare Settle for Fine” Award (biggest desire to improve)

• Tanisha Mercado - Defensive Player of the Year

•Maya Haney - Offensive Player of the Year and Team MVP The Lady Jackets finished 8-6 on the season and were third in District 3A-2.

The KHS boys were 9-7 and also were third in their district.

Both teams lost to Christian Heritage Academy in the first round of the playoffs.
