KHS sweeps through opening day of regional

Kingfisher needed a spark.

Sometimes it comes off the end of the bat.

With Kingfisher struggling to put away Cushing in the opener of the first ever Class 4A softball regional hosted on its home field, Kinlee East stepped to the plate with Adlee Friesen on third base and Kendall Farrar at second.

East, admittedly, was swinging for the fences.

“When these girls do that, it actually goes over the fence,” East said in the dugout afterward. “When I do it, I hit it off the end of the bat.”

It was enough. East legged out the dribbler and beat the throw at the first base.

Friesen scored on the play, turned around and saw Farrar never stopped running.

She, too, scored as KHS started to break open the game.

The flood gates stayed open and Kingfisher eventually won 10-4. The Lady Jackets followed it up Thursday night by run-ruling Ada 12-1 and put themselves within one victory of a regional championship.

That opportunity came on Friday, again, against the Lady Cougars (after press time of this edition).

KHS needed just one win to claim the regional and advance to a super regional this week. For Ada to claim the title, the Cougars needed two wins Friday against the Lady Jackets.

When asked if she was waving home Farrar on the infield single by East, coach Tiffany Goodwin had a simple answer: “I always send Kendall.”

The sending wasn’t done.

The next at-bat saw Lily Voth step to the plate.

The junior already kick-started Kingfisher’s offense in the first inning with a two-run blast over the centerfield wall.

That gave Kingfisher an early 3-0 lead, but it didn’t stick.

Cushing chipped away and by the time Kingfisher took to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, it trailed 4-3.

The Lady Jackets tied it back up in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Leni Murray banged a triple off the wall to score Friesen, who preceded her with a double.

Voth’s bat gave KHS the lead in the fifth with an RBI double and Addison Johnson followed with a run-scoring single to give her team a 6-4 lead.

The Tigers got two aboard with just one out in the sixth, but Voth got a strikeout and fly out to end the threat.

Then when she got to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, the junior made sure there were no more threats Voth blasted another homer, this one over the left-center field wall, to put the game away.

It was a monster game for Voth, who finished 3 for 4 and scored two runs in addition to her 5 RBIs.

She also threw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. She gave up two hits, walked two and struck out four.

Friesen was 2 for 3 and scored three times while East had 2 RBIs and scored twice.

In the nightcap, Callie Blair delivered a lot of 3’s.

Blair had 3 hits, 3 runs and 3 RBIs in her 3 at-bats as KHS dominated Ada.

After a scoreless first, Ada was able to plate a run in the top of the second, but Kingfisher took command in the bottom of the frame. Liliana Garramone tied the game with a bases-loaded walk and then Blair scored on a wild pitch before Friesen’s RBI groundout made it 3-1.

Another run scored on Ryan Scammahorn’s fielder’s choice for a 4-1 advantage.

Scammahorn was playing for the first time since a knee injury suffered nearly three weeks ago.

Johnson got KHS started in the third with an RBI single before Blair’s follow-up single scored two runs.

Murray and Garramaone added their own RBI singles as the lead swelled to 9-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Johnson doubled home East and Blair’s hardhit single up the middle pushed home Johnson.

Ada’s center fielder misplayed the ball and Blair made a full trip around the bases.

Voth closed out the inning for her second win of the day.

She gave up just two hits and an earned run in five innings. Voth struck out seven batters.

In addition to Blair’s 3’s, Johnson was also 3 for 3 and scored 3 runs while adding 2 RBIs.
