Late runs in both of their games Thursday have the Dover Lady Longhorns just one win away from a district softball championship.

They earned a 6-3 comefrom- behind win over Carney in the Class B district opener and then pulled away from Medford 8-1 in the nightcap…just before the skies opened up to deliver rain to the area.

Dover played Carney again Friday for the district title (after press time of this edition). Carney needed two wins against Dover to claim the championship while Dover needed only one.

With the score tied, Dover broke loose for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Carney.

A pitcher’s duel saw Dover fall behind 1-0 in the top of the fifth before tying it in the bottom half on a Carney error.

In the sixth, Alexcea Caldwell led off with a double to become the first of four straight Lady Longhorns to reach base.

That included Presley Squires drawing a bases- loaded walk to score Caldwell for a 2-1 lead.

Then with two outs, Maeli Turner slapped a double off the wall to push three runs across.

Dayanara Padilla’s follow- up double scored Turner for a 6-1 advantage.

That was more than enough for Brooklyn Martin, who struck out 10 batters while giving up eight hits in the game.

Dover countered with five hits, four of them in the decisive sixth.

The game against Medford was tied 1-1 entering the fifth before Dover scored two runs. Five more runs in the sixth blew the game wide open.

Yaretzi Obeso’s RBI gave Dover the 2-1 lead and Caldwell scored Turner when she reached on an error in the fifth.

Turner added a two-run single to get things going with two outs in the sixth.

Valeria Padilla and Caldwell had RBIs before the inning ended.

Squires, Turner and Caldwell each had two hits.

Squires, who drew three walks, had an RBI and a run scored.

Martin again got the win as she gave up only two hits in the game and struck out nine.
