Lady Warriors down Porum to punch state ticket
Lawson Geheb’s had a knack for the long ball all season, especially during last week’s regional tournament.
None has been bigger than the one she hit on Friday.
The Okarche junior sent a three-run blast over the center field wall to give Okarche its first lead of the game against Porum.
The lead stuck - and grew - as the Lady Warriors won 8-5 to claim a Class A regional championship and advance to this week’s state tournament in Shawnee.
According to iwasatthegame. com, Okarche has only advanced to state in fastpitch one other time. That was in Class 2A in 1987.
The Lady Warriors were in the catbird seat in this year’s regional final as Porum needed two wins over the eighthranked hosts to win the regional.
The Panthers made a run at that first win early as they collected four singles and a walk among the first five batters of the game to stake a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Warriors got them all back in the bottom of the inning, which included RBI hits by Kinley Pruett and Callie Cramer.
Porum countered with a two-run homer in the second inning and took that lead all the way until Geheb stepped to the plate in the fourth.
Chloe Rother and Katie Parham got on base with singles.
Geheb then put her team on top for good by sending the 3-1 offering over the wall for her 13th homer of the season.
Geheb hit four homers in Okarche’s three regional games.
Rother and Emma Roby added RBIs in the game for insurance.
Cramer was 2 for 2 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
Parham was 2 for 4 and scored twice while Avery Treece also collected two hits.
Geheb settled down after the first two innings and didn’t allow a run in the final five frames.
She gave up seven hits, but only three in the final six innings, and struck out nine batters.
The win moved the Lady Warriors to 28-9.
They will take on No. 2 Caddo in the opening round of the Class A state tournament.
That game will be played at 4 p.m. Thursday on Field 2 at Firelake Ballpark in Shawnee.
The winner will take on the winner of No. 3 Cheyenne-Reydon and seventh-ranked Wister at 11 a.m. Friday in the semifi nals. That game will also be on Field 2.
The other side of the bracket includes No. 1 Arapaho-Butler vs. No. 12 Pioneer-Pleasant Vale and No. 4 Canute vs. No. 6 Drummond.
