Dover acted like it had been there before.

On one hand, the Longhorns have. On the other, they haven’t in a dozen years.

Either way, Dover is state tournament bound after a 10-1 thumping of Mountain View-Gotebo in Thursday’s Class B regional championship game.

The win capped the fifth-ranked Longhorns’ sweep through the regional.

After Trypp Lack coaxed a groundout to end his complete game effort, the Longhorns’ celebration didn’t include a dogpile.

It was merely a couple of high-fives and handshakes.

It’s Dover’s first time to qualify for the spring state tournament since 2014.

However, the Longhorns were also in a baseball state tournament about six months ago as they broke a 15-year drought in qualifying last fall.

Dover’s path to the fall state tournament was a dramatic one.

This one was without anxious moments.

The Tigers survived the consolation rounds to earn a crack at the tournament’s top seed, but needed to beat Dover twice.

The Longhorns squashed most of the upset hopes by scoring six runs in the first two innings.

That was more than enough for Lack, who only gave up five hits, walked one and struck out eight batters in seven innings.

Brennan Fletcher, Ivan Ruiz and A.J. Avila had RBI singles in the first inning.

Fletcher and Ruiz struck again in the second.

Fletcher had an RBI groundout and Ruiz pushed a run across with a double. Those came after Casen Buck delivered an RBI double.

Errors and walks allowed Dover to push more runs across as the game wore on.

Ruiz was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.

Six other Longhorns had one hit apiece.

Buck pitched a gem Wednesday to lead the Longhorns to a 7-1 victory over Mountain View-Gotebo in a semifinal.

Buck gave up only four hits and struck out 13 over his seven innings.

He also gave himself some breathing room in the fourth as his double scored two runs and gave Dover a 5-1 lead.

Avila blasted a solo homer earlier in the frame.

Lack’s RBI single in the sixth provided more insurance.

Lack put Dover up 1-0 with his own homer in the top of the first inning.

The Tigers tied it in the bottom half, then Lack gave Dover the lead for good with an RBI double in the third.

He finished 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

Bryce Cockayne also collected three hits while Buck was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and 3 runs scored.

The Longhorns opened the regional with a 13-3 run rule victory against Smithville.

They scored 10 straight runs in the final two frames after Smithville tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth.

The Braves scored two of those runs in the fourth inning and forced Dover to use three pitchers in the frame.

The Longhorns answered with a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame.

After Brok Cooper and Buck reached base, Cockayne brought them home with a double.

Lack followed with an RBI double and Fletcher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 7-3 game.

Lack steadied things on the mound for Dover and the Longhorns ended it in the fifth.

Lack had a two-run single, Ruiz also drove in two with a single and Avila put the game away with a bases loaded walk.

Lack was 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs.

Ruiz had 3 RBIs and Cockayne drove in two.

Cockayne and Buck scored three runs apiece.

The state tournament will begin Thursday. The OSSAA will release a bracket early this week.

This will be Dover’s 19th state appearance in the spring.
