Matousek recovers from spill to set two PRs

Julianne Matousek may have more successful state track and field meets in her future.

She’ll be hard-pressed to make them more memorable.

The Hennessey High School freshman scored at least one point in all three of her events last weekend at the Class 3A state meet held at Catoosa High School.

It started on Friday morning when Matousek finished fifth in the 3,200 meter run, earning herself a spot on the medal stand.

“I thought she ran a really smart race,” said her coach, Cheyenne Baxter.

The memorable part came Saturday.

Competing in her first of two events of the day, Matousek was battling for another trip to the medal stand in the home stretch of the 800 meter run.

She got a trip - more like a fall - of a different sort.

In the final 25 meters, Matousek lost her footing and fell to the track surface.

Sporting the “road rash” on her leg and on the lane assignment patch on her leg, Matousek got back to her feet and still managed to finish the race in eighth place.

But that wasn’t all. Despite the fall, Matousek set a new PR with her time of 2:27.01.

A little later that afternoon, Matousek was back at it in the mile run.

She placed seventh in 5:25, shattering her previous best time by 12 seconds.

“I was very impressed with her 800,” Baxter said. “To have a PR after falling is super impressive…and then she had another big PR in the mile.

“She is a tough kid.” Matousek accounted for all seven of Hennessey’s team points at the meet.

Added Baxter: “I’m excited to see what else she accomplishes over the next three years.”
