In the final race of a long, grueling day, the Kingfisher High School girls track and field team pulled off a new school record…and almost a Class 4A regional championship.

Scout Snodgrass torched the track for a 56.86 in the final leg of the 1,600 meter relay to lead the Lady Jacket quartet to a gold medal in the event.

The time of 4:01.73 blistered the 4:03.32 set by Snodgrass, Ryann Farrar, Mattie Slezickey and Abbie Myers the previous Tuesday at a meet in Weatherford, which was a new school record.

It lasted all of four days as Farrar got the race started with an opening leg of 59.43 seconds.

Slezickey kept KHS in second place with her 1:04.06, but then Myers passed North Rock Creek’s third leg and gave Kingfisher the lead with her split of 1:01.39.

The lead was narrow as Snodgrass and NRC’s Abagail Bloyed took off on the final leg.

Bloyed tried to push the pace, but Snodgrass was game…and then some.

By the second turn, Snodgrass was in command.

By the home stretch, it was merely a race for a new school record, one which she easily attained.

The win gave KHS 20 points in the team standings.

Entering that final event, only Oklahoma Christian School’s 114 points was better than Kingfisher’s 97.

OCS managed to finish fifth in the mile relay to earn four points.

It was just enough as OCS won the regional championship with 118 points to Kingfisher’s 117.

That didn’t diminish Snodgrass’ day.

The senior, who is signing this week with the University of Tulsa, won four gold medals for the Lady Jackets.

The first came in the day’s second track event, the 3,200 meter relay.

This time it was Farrar, Slezickey and fellow senior Harper Evans joining in the race.

Snodgrass was in second when she got the baton, but dominated the final lap of her 800 meters to win the race by more than three seconds.

Next came a pair of individual events. Snodgrass won the 400 meter run with a time of 58.25.

She then claimed gold in the event in which she’s the defending state champ - the 800.

Snodgrass outclassed Khloe Clemence of Woodward to win by just over 1 second.

Those were Kingfisher’s only golds of the day, but not the only state qualifiers.

The top three finishers in each event from each of four regionals automatically qualify for state. Then the next four best times/ heights/distances are taken from the combined regionals for at-large berths.

Myers became an automatic qualifier in three different events.

In addition to the 1,600 relay, she was also second in the 300 hurdles and was part of the bronze medal 800 relay team.

She was joined in that race by Taitym Walker, Reese Roof and Maya Haney.

Roof was just behind Myers in the 300 hurdles and automatically qualified in that event as well.

Farrar, only a freshman, is also a qualifier in three events.

She was on the two relays and took fourth in the 400. Her time of 1:00.83 was good enough to make her an additional qualifier.

Evans is headed to state in two events.

Prior to running in the 3,200 relay, Evans broke in the track in the day’s first event - the 3,200 meter run.

The senior took third to punch her ticket.

On her final jump of the day, Rylee Long-Bush clinched the bronze medal in the pole vault.

The junior cleared 9 feet to set a new PR.

Ela Hartman is headed to state in two field events.

The sophomore is making a return trip in the high jump as she cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to place third.

Her jump of 16-5 in the long jump would have won gold at two other 4A regionals, but placed her fourth in Chisholm.

Her distance, however, easily qualified her.

KHS also got points in the 400 relay as Walker, Roof, Haney and Myers placed fifth as well as the pole vault where Hinsley Brodrick was sixth.

The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Catoosa High School.
