A ‘Meck’ of a Day for KHS trio

It was a good day to be a Mecklenburg. The trio of Mason Mecklenburg, Braxton Mecklenburg and Maddox Mecklenburg combined to win six medals - including three golds - on Saturday to help the Kingfisher High School boys team to a second-place finish in their own meet.

Jacket baseball keeps pace in district race

Kingfisher kept on track to set up a district championship showdown with Heritage Hall at the end of the regular season. The Jackets did their part last Monday and Tuesday by sweeping Harrah in a pair of District 4A-1 games… although that second win came with a bit of drama.

Not only did the Kingfisher girls soccer team pick up its first win of the season on Tuesday, it did so in dramatic fashion. With just three minutes left in the second overtime, freshman Peyton Walker took a pass from Hannah Click and put it in the net to give KHS a 2-1 home victory over Alva.

More than an hour after her round was completed, Maddi Kamas had to go back to work. On the golf course, that is. Kamas and Oklahoma Christian School’s Brooklyn Benn both shot 4-over-par 76s on Wednesday during the Kingfisher Large-School Invitational.

Kari Shepard now has a new goal in mind. Entering her senior season at Kingfisher High School, Shepard had never broken 100 in a golf tournament during her career. She busted through that barrier earlier this month in a tournament at Rose Creek.

The 2019 Kingfisher High School basketball team was ridiculously loaded. On top of a lockdown defender and a solid 3-point shooter in Reece Lafferty, the team had what turned out to be two Division I and two Division II signees in the starting lineup.

Stone, Cortes named to OCA All-State team

Kingfisher’s Matthew Stone and Bijan Cortes were selected to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State basketball team last week. The duo will compete for the Large West (Classes 4A-6A) when it plays the Large East selections July 29 in the Tulsa area.

KHS pins down new wrestling coach

Kingfisher High School will have a new wrestling coach for the first time in more than three decades when it takes to the mats next winter. The board of education on Monday unanimously approved Bryan Dutton as that person.
