SWOSU cancels fall grad ceremony

Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford originally planned to celebrate May 2020 graduates at a fall ceremony, however school officials have determined the COVID-19 pandemic continues to make it unsafe to have large gatherings. Thus, SWOSU must make changes to its calendar.

Keri Kim Finley

Keri Kim Finley, 68, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away peacefully on Sept. 30, 2020. Kim was born on May 9, 1952, in Guymon. He spent his childhood in Lindsay, and after the family moved, he attended high school in Kingfisher.

Koni Hembree

Koni Langley Hembree, 64, died unexpectedly at her home in Joplin, Mo., on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020. A graveside service under the direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home of Hennessey will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Kingfisher Cemetery with Rev. P. J. Stewart officiating.

Kathleen S. Ottis, (Kathy, Katy) passed from this earth to eternal life on Oct. 6, 2020, surrounded by family. She was 72 and had recently been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive blood cancer. Kathy was born Nov.

Graveside service for Bobbie Shimanek, 78, was Monday, Oct. 12, at Hennessey Cemetery officiated by Rev. Ish Engle. Arrangements were by Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home, Hennessey. Bobbie was born in Seminole on June 17, 1942, to Henry and Evelyn Fugett Mathes and died Friday, Oct.

Marjorie French

Marjorie Elizabeth French, 97, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, at Weston County Manor in Wyoming. Marge was born Jan. 1, 1923, on a farm near Dill City. Her parents were George W. Frisby and Helen Bonnell Frisby. She had one sister, Mary Jo Frisby.

Paul Hix said last week’s football game for his Hennessey Eagles “felt like one hand was tied behind our backs.” That’s not a knock on his team, just the situation it has faced for the last few weeks.

PR-fect day on the course

Heading into last weekend’s meet, Kingfisher High School cross country coach Kerri Lafferty knew there was a chance for her runners to have individual successes. “Their course is pretty flat,” said Lafferty of the layout for Chisholm/OBA Cross Country Invitational on Saturday in Enid.

Jackets escape McLoud with narrow victory

True, Kingfisher got the win last Friday night when the Jackets resumed their district schedule with a 21-13 victory at McLoud. That doesn’t mean they left Pottawatomie County feeling too good about it.
