EYES ON THE PRIZE – While it was the first day of the fall season for some fall sports, Monday also marked the first day football teams could start practicing statewide. Kingfisher junior Carter Stephenson is pictured hauling in a pass during that first practice. Teams are only allowed to practice without pads for the first four days before donning the pads on Friday. Kingfi sher has its first scrimmage Aug. 22 at Oklahoma Christian School and then Aug. 28 at Perkins before opening the season Sept. 5 at Weatherford.

Back-to-school time memories

Us kids on the east side car-pooled during my junior high years at Classen High School in OKC. Then, we moved on the north side of town a few blocks from the school. So, unlike my parents, I didn’t have to walk several miles up-hill both to-andfrom school. However, it was a couple, or three blocks, to the school entrance even when I took a short-cut through the sidewalks at the Epworth Methodist Church.
