Eugene Frederick Luber, 89, of Wichita, Kan., passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Okarche, officiated by Pastor Joel Heckman.

Eugene was born Oct. 31, 1933, in Okarche to Fred and Regina Kremier Luber.

He married Clara B. Rott on April 17, 1954, at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Eugene worked for Scrivner Wholesale Foods and also for a landscaping company in Tulsa.

Upon moving back to Okarche, he worked for the Ford dealership in Kingfi sher. He drove a school bus for Okarche Public Schools and later became a custodian at the elementary school.

In 1976, Eugene and Clara purchased Okarche Lawn & Garden. They ran that business until retiring in 2000 and moving to Divide, Colo.

They resided there until relocating to Wichita.

When Gene wasn’t working, he liked to take nature pictures, was an avid gardener, enjoyed traveling with Clara, but was never far from his fishing poles.

Eugene was happiest when he was fishing and if he couldn’t fish, then driving a school bus.

He cared about his community and championed many causes he believed were worthwhile.

Eugene was a friend to many and never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, sister-in-law Jonie Jo Luber and granddaughter Blair Lorraine Johnson.

Eugene is survived by daughter Sherry Scheffer and husband Richard of Afton; grandchildren Shawna Scheffer of Pond Creek, Jessica Hegeman of Derby, Kan., Scott Scheffer and wife Alison of Wichita, Elizabeth Johnson of San Diego, Calif., Samuel Scheffer and wife Leanne of Shawnee, Kan.; seven great-grandchildren; and brother Darryl Luber of Oklahoma City.
