Basketball. Cross country? Dover has become a contender in the first two sports in recent years, but added another to the list.

The Longhorns made their season debut last Saturday at the Kingfisher Cross Country Meet and did so in impressive fashion.

They were runners-up at the meet, narrowly finishing behind Class 4A Weatherford.

That included a firstplace finish by senior Bly Frieouf, who is the reigning Class A state champion, an honor he claimed last season while at Medford.

Frieouf led a pack of four Longhorns to finish in the top 11 of the two-mile race.

He finished in 9:55.83 as Weatherford’s Keon Lackey, a top-10 placer at the Class 4A state meet last year, was second in 10:12.07.

Cashion’s Cole Baustert was third in 10:44.38.

Two spots behind him was Reid Frieouf, Bly’s younger brother, as he crossed in 10:48.84 for Dover.

The Longhorns also saw Nick Spradlin finish 10th and Brady Reese 11th.

Spradlin was a state qualifier for Dover last year, which just missed for qualifying as a team.

Brok Cooper was 19th to round out Dover’s scoring.

The Longhorns tallied 35 points, second only to Weatherford’s 31.

Cashion didn’t have enough for a full team.

Judson Graham was 26th for the Wildcats while Hayden Green was 48th and Alan Cates 73rd.

Rogan Choate led the Hennessey contingent as he placed 32nd out of 101 individuals.

Chris Perez was 44th and Asher Ward 49th.

Hunter Spradlin made it a sweep in the boys’ races for Dover.

The eighth grader won the junior high race with a one-mile time of 5:22.97.

Brantley Coleman was Cashion’s top finisher at 11th in 6:04.30.

Nicolas Corral was 15th for Hennessey and Shecotah Burpo tops for Kingfisher at 16th.

None of the county schools fielded enough runners for a full team.

Matousek strong in season debut for HHS Hennessey’s Julianne Matousek dominated the field Saturday as she claimed medalist honors in the Kingfisher Cross Country Meet.

The HHS sophomore cleared the one-mile course in 5:47.63, well ahead of runner-up Addison Ritter of Kremlin-Hillsdale, who crossed in 6:03.96.

Matousek is coming off a freshman campaign in which she helped Hennessey reach the Class 2A state meet a year ago and was a state qualifier in four events in track and field.

Hennessey placed fifth as a team with 125 points.

Weatherford won the meet with 37, well ahead of runner-up Okeene’s 64.

Kingfisher was third with 98 and The Academy next at 99.

Miranda Ortega finished 21st overall for Hennessey, but was 17th among runners scoring for their respective teams.

Matousek was one of three county runners to place in the top 10 out of 85 overall runners on Saturday.

Tops among them was Cashion freshman Hattie Wood.

Sporting a cast on her left hand, Wood managed to place fourth in 6:04.72.

Senior Mattie Slezickey led Kingfisher’s pack as she was 10th in 6:18.47.

Cashion didn’t have enough to field a full team, but Lyla Sloan placed 11th for the Lady Wildcats and Peyton Shadix 70th.

Also for Hennessey, Jo-Hanna Matousek was 44th (30th), Lorelei Root 54th (38th) and Emily Bryson 55th (39th) to round out its scoring.

In junior high girls, Kingfi sher’s Natalie Kirtley finished second out of 89 runners.

The sixth grader ran the mile in 6:18.81.

Teammate Olyvia Cooper just missed the top 10 as she placed 11th.

Hennessey seventh graders Quinn Ward and Kennes Briley placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

Alexis Richardson was Cashion’s top finisher at 32nd.

Hennessey was third among junior high girls teams with 75 points.

Weatherford won the meet with 43 and the Academy was second with 69.

Kingfisher took fifth with 92 points.
