Cashion’s playmakers made big plays and it kept a rivalry trophy with the Wildcats for at least another year.

Kellen Smith threw for 279 yards and Grayson Davis, Rival Fields and Hank Brown all scored touchdowns as Cashion downed Crescent 37-14 last Friday in a home version of the “War on 74.”

“Considering it was a rivalry game and it’s Week 0, it was absolutely a solid performance to start the season,” said head coach Lynn Shackelford.

While the offense racked up 427 yards, Cashion’s defense allowed its visitors just 99 and five first downs.

Crescent didn’t score an offensive touchdown until the fourth quarter.

The Tigers only had 35 offensive snaps in the game.

“Our defense was really solid,” Shackelford said. “We never allowed them to get any kind of momentum going.”

Davis had a team-high six tackles while Gage Jeffries added five.

After that defense forced a punt on the opening drive of the game, Cashion wasted little time in taking the lead.

Smith found Fields for a pass over the middle and the senior took care of the rest, racing 63 yards for a touchdown.

The Wildcats’ second drive ended with Davis catching a short pass, breaking through multiple wouldbe tackles and scoring from 20 yards out.

Davis was stripped of the ball on Cashion’s third drive and the fumble was recovered by Crescent.

The defense answered, however, and Cashion got two more scores before the end of the half.

One saw Brown plunge it in from 2 yards out and the other was a 28-yard field goal off the foot of Andrew Stockton as the Wildcats staked a 23-0 lead at the break.

Fields caught his second TD of the game in the third quarter to push it to 30-0.

That led to Crescent’s first score as Chezdon South returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a TD.

“We’ve got to get better on kickoffs,” Shackelford said. “We can’t give up touchdowns like that, especially in closer games.”

The Wildcats responded by tacking on a 1-yard TD run by Davis before the end of the quarter.

Smith produced as expected as the experienced senior QB was 21 of 31 for 279 yards and three scores.

Stockton came in late in the game and was 3 for 4 for 19 yards.

Davis caught nine passes for 116 yards while Fields hauled in four for 91 yards.

Caden Boulware added six receptions for 43 yards.

On the ground Brown got 18 touches and produced 86 yards.

Cashion rushed for 129 yards as a team.

The Wildcats now turn their attention west as they head to Kingfisher this week for a first-ever meeting between the two programs.

“We will need to block better overall,” said Shackelford of areas to improve heading into Week 1. “And we need to catch the ball better. We can’t have the drops this week like we did last week.”
