As far back as she can remember, Olivia Wilcox has wanted to play collegiate softball. She took the next big step in that direction on Wednesday. Wilcox signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her softball career at Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City.

Small tears of disappointment welled in their eyes on the afternoon of competition, but a day of contemplation helped bring perspective to the Kingfisher girls cross country team.

Hennessey’s win streak came to an abrupt halt last Friday against the best team in its district and perhaps one of the better squads in all of 2A. Oklahoma Christian School dominated both sides of the ball in a 55-0 victory over the Eagles in Edmond.

The two frontrunners for the District A-3 championship had the same defensive game plan when they met last week: Stop the run. There’s only one problem when teams do that against Cashion and that’s the Wildcats’ lethal passing attack.

District title hopes are gone. Now it’s about pride and playing at home. Kingfisher turned it over six times last Friday night - five times in the first half alone - en route to a 47-21 home loss to Heritage Hall.

Crescent had to wait a couple of extra days, but still put together another methodical victory. The Tigers defeated Hinton 24-6 on Monday to improve to 7-1 entering the season’s final week.

Softball season has ended. Cross country comes to a close this week. Football season is nearing the playoffs. All of that, plus November’s arrival, means it’s time for winter sports. The first to begin is basketball and for Classes A and B, they can begin high school games this week.

Two Kingfisher softball players earned all-district honors and three more were honorable mention after a vote by coaches last week. District 4A-1 first-team honors were awarded to senior Mia Farrell and Olivia Wilcox. Farrell was named as an outfielder and Wilcox as a pitcher.

Zoey Evans was mentally gearing up to run the final race of her high school career over the weekend. Now she’ll have to slow those gears down for a few more days.

Earlier this season, Hennessey got its first win in almost two years. Now the Eagles have their first official win streak since 2017. With the exception of two plays, Hennessey dominated Alva in every aspect of the game last Friday and left town with a 17-14 victory.
