Every now and then, there’s a kind of basketball performance that has people buzzing for hours - even days - after a game. Bijan Cortes put on one such a show last Friday night.

Hennessey’s starting guards combined for 50 points Friday and the Eagles managed to avenge their only loss of the season. Angel Rodriguez scored 26 and Juan Dominguez 24 as the Eagles pasted Pioneer-Pleasant Vale 66-51 at home.

Lynn Shackelford has been here before and felt the sting of a state championship loss. But this one? It stings a little more. Cashion’s dream of its first football state title since 1981 was crushed last Saturday by Ringling.

It was a night of milestones for the Kingfisher High School girls basketball team last Tuesday. The Lady Jackets nabbed their first win of the season as they held off Chisholm 52-47 at the APB. The home opener was three days ahead of schedule.

Going into the contest, Chisholm didn’t figure to be much of an obstacle for the Kingfisher boys basketball team. And that’s exactly how it played out. The Yellowjackets forced more turnovers than they allowed fi eld-goal attempts in last Tuesday night’s 61-14 victory over Chisholm at the APB.

This is the first of three big basketball tournament weeks in the state of Oklahoma. The next two are both in January. Four of Kingfi sher County’s area teams are taking part this week. Lomega is in the Canton Invitational and Crescent in the Frontier Shootout, both of which began Monday. [ Ed.

Nine weeks. In the grand scheme of things, nine weeks isn’t a lot of time. In football terms, it’s 90% of a high school regular season. That’s also how many weeks Cashion’s next opponent went without giving up a single point this season. Nine weeks.

A big game can turn on a number of things. A huge offensive play. A turnover. An adjustment.
