Young, Slezickey earn top WAC honors; 3 Lady Jackets first-team
Taylor Young was voted Coach of the Year and Mattie Slezickey the Defensive Player of the Year, it was announced by the Western Athletic Conference last week.
Slezickey was one of four Lady Jackets to earn first- or second-team all-conference honors.
Joining her on the first team were seniors Reese Roof and Abbie Myers.
Sophomore Ela Hartman was a second-team pick while junior Taitym Walker earned honorable mention.
KHS went 8-0 and won the conference this season to earn the conference title for the first time.
Overall the Lady Jackets were 26-5 and advanced to the Class 4A state tournament.
Dasia Givens was voted the conference’s Most Valuable Player by the coaches.
Camryn Regier of Bethany was the Offensive Player of the Year and Cache’s Tenley Webster the Newcomer of the Year.
The starting point guard, Slezickey averaged 2.3 steals and 2.8 deflections a game on defense.
She added 9.3 points and 2.7 assists per contest.
Opponents averaged just 38.3 points and shot 35.2 percent from the field against the Lady Jackets this season.
Roof led the team with 12.7 points a game. She also averaged 2.2 assists and 1.9 steals.
Myers scored 12.0 points and led the team with 7.2 rebounds per game. She joined Slezickey to lead the team with 2.3 steals.
Hartman scored 10.1 points to go with 4.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists a game.
Walker averaged 4.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals.
