Cashion and Fairview put on another thriller.

This time the game ended where it started, but also with the same end result as last season.

After Cashion stormed back from two scores down to take the lead, the Yellowjackets got a late TD and then held on for a 42-35 victory on Friday on their home turf.

Fairview downed Cashion 42-39 in overtime last year on the road…for both teams...sort of.

With 29 seconds left in regulation, a transformer that feeds Cashion’s stadium blew, killing all power to the facility.

The teams eventually loaded up and finished regulation and overtime in Crescent.

There were no power issues this time, but there were turnover issues for the Wildcats.

Cashion coughed it up five times while Fairview had none.

“One interception came at the end of the first half and the other on the last play of the game,” said Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford. “But the other three turnovers certainly didn’t help.”

Fairview continually struck Cashion with the big play as Aiden Nightengale threw four touchdown passes to three different receivers.

He had strikes of 31 yards to Austin Hickman and 18 yards to Haden Miller in the first quarter as the Yellowjackets staked a 14-0 lead.

Cashion stayed in the game as quarterback Kellen Smith got his team on the board with an 18-yard scamper in the second quarter.

Nightengale and Hickman connected again, however, and pushed it back to 21-7 with a 25-yard TD.

The Wildcats then got their own big play as the yo-yo of momentum began.

Smith found Hank Brown for a 60-yard touchdown to get Cashion within 21-15 at halftime.

The teams traded scores early in the third before the Jackets’ Alex Houk broke free for a 63-yard touchdown run to put his team up 34-22 at 6:04 of the third quarter.

That led to Cashion’s first - and only - back-toback scores of the game.

On the ensuing possession, Smith swung a short pass out to Grayson Davis on a third-down play.

Davis broke through three tackles, then was off to the races as he got Cashion to within 34-29 on a 75yard touchdown at 4:48 of the third.

It stayed there until 7:16 remained in the game when Smith capped a Cashion scoring drive with a 1-yard plunge.

The Wildcats’ two-point attempt was no good, but they led for the first time, 35-34.

While Fairview popped some chunk plays on the following drive, there was no massive play.

Instead, the Yellowjackets methodically marched down the field.

They caught a huge break when they lined up to go for it on a 4th-and-short play at the Cashion 5.

They got the Wildcats to jump, giving them a fresh set of downs.

Nightengale scored the go-ahead touchdown from 3 yards out on the next play.

Cashion couldn’t answer on the final drive of the game as Smith’s heave from midfield was picked off by Fairview near the goal line.

It was Cashion’s second straight one-score defeat after losing 20-14 at Kingfi sher the week before.

In each game, mistakes proved costly, whether it be inopportune turnovers or a late penalty.

“I really thought we played well,” said Shackelford. “We just had too many self-inflicted wounds.” Giving Shackelford optimism moving forward was his team’s ability to run for 202 yards.

Brown had 130 yards on just 17 carries.

“That’s as well as we’ve run it all season,” Shackelford said.

Smith was 15 of 26 for 272 yards and two scores.

He added 55 rushing yards and three TDs.

Davis caught seven passes for 130 yards as Cashion racked up 479 yards of total offense.

Fairview countered with 491, led by Nightengale’s performance of 20 for 28 passing for 291 yards.

“I think we’re close to being a pretty good team,” Shackelford said. “If we stop hurting ourselves, we’ve got a chance.”

A chance to break the two-game skid will have to wait two weeks.

Cashion is off this week and returns to the field Sept. 24 against Alva.

It will be Cashion’s first home game since opening the season on Aug. 28 and will be the Wildcats’ District 2A-II-1 opener.

The Goldbugs are currently 1-2 with a loss of 45-19 to Fairview in Week 0 and 40-0 to Chisholm last week sandwiching a 34-8 win at Perry.
