‘Cats make easy work of CHA

There were a lot of big numbers in Cashion’s win Friday at Christian Heritage Academy.

Passing yards. Rushing yards. Touchdowns. The score. But coach Lynn Shackelford stressed the smallest of those numbers: 1.

That’s how many turnovers the Wildcats had in their 55-20 victory, two fewer than their opponent.

“We finally won the turnover battle in an important game,” said the Wildcats’ head coach after his team won for the third straight time to move to 4-2.

More importantly, Cashion kept pace in the District 2A-II-1 race with Community Christian and Hennessey. Each of those teams is 3-0 in district games.

CHA scored first when it struck for a 46-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

That was the last highlight for the home team for quite a while as Cashion commenced to rattle off 41 straight points.

Before the end of the first quarter, Kellen Smith found Rival Fields for a 24yard touchdown and Hank Brown ran in another from 10 yards out.

In the second, Smith and Fields hooked up again, this time on a 35-yard TD.

Grayson Davis then picked off a pass and returned it 84 yards for a score for a 28-6 halftime lead.

Cashion tacked on 20 more points in the third quarter.

Smith opened the scoring with a 61-yard run and later hit Davis for a 19-yard score.

Brown got his second TD of the night on a 3-yard run as the score ballooned to 48-14.

Smith and Davis connected one more time in the fourth, this one for a 21-yard touchdown.

The two were making up for lost time.

Unable to dress out each of the last two games, both had big nights.

Smith accounted for 363 total yards, including going 17 of 30 for 275 yards through the air.

He added 88 yards on the ground.

Davis caught 10 passes for 131 yards and his TDs.

Fields made it a pair of Wildcats surpassing the century receiving mark with four catches for 113 yards.

Brown contributed 68 rushing yards.

Gavin Layton led Cashion’s defense with 10 stops.

Colson Cotter added seven and Davis had six.

“Gavin has been playing his tail off the last three weeks,” said Shackelford. “Overall, our defense was pretty good.”

Cashion returns home for a two-game stand which starts Thursday as Millwood comes to town.

The Falcons are currently 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the district. Week 8 will see Hennessey visit the Wildcats.
