Fort Cobb-Broxton is tough enough to beat.

Throw in a few errors and one disastrous inning and that makes the task nearly impossible.

That was the fate of the Dover Longhorns last Friday as they were downed 12-1 in five innings by the top-ranked Mustangs in the Class B baseball state semifinals at Seminole.

The loss ended fifthranked Dover’s season with a 25-7 mark. The Longhorns were making their first appearance in a fall state semifinal since 2008.

The Mustangs were defeated 8-3 by No. 2 Tupelo in Saturday’s state championship game.

Dover struck first and in a familiar way when Casen Buck led off the game with a walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Brok Cooper and then third on a wild pitch.

The senior scored on Trypp Lack’s groundout.

The lead stood until the second inning when Fort Cobb-Broxton struck back.

Kase Wilson led off with a triple and scored on Dru Bellamy’s single.

A sacrifice fly later in the inning pushed home another run for a 2-1 Mustang lead.

The Longhorns had their chances to stay in it.

They got the leadoff runner aboard in the third, but it was followed by a double play.

Cooper and Lack still reached after that, but the threat ended with a popup.

Dover then managed to load the bases in the fourth with just one out.

Ivan Ruiz and Sloan Merrill singled before Ethan Dayton drew a walk.

However, a popup and strikeout ended that opportunity.

It would be the last as the wheels came off for Dover in the bottom of the inning.

The Mustangs put together four hits, two hit batters and took advantage of three Dover errors to push home eight runs.

And that was just before Dover recorded its first out of the inning.

They’d get two more hits and score twice more before Dover could get out of the frame.

By the time it was done, Fort Cobb had an 11-run lead.

Dover was retired in order in the top of the fifth to kick in the run rule.

The Mustangs had eight hits in the game, six of them by the bottom four batters in their lineup.

Bellamy, batting in the eight spot, was 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and a run.

Dover collected three hits, one each off the bats of Cooper, Ruiz and Merrill.

Lack took the loss with three-plus innings of work. He allowed four hits and seven runs, six of which were earned.

Cooper finished out the fourth inning and gave up four hits and five runs, none of which were earned.

Dover was in the fall state tournament for the 17th time, including second straight. Prior to last year, the Longhorns hadn’t qualifi ed since 2010.

Thursday’s victory against Moss was the first at the tournament since downing Arnett in the 2008 quarterfinals.
