HHS downs Alva; still unbeaten in district

Hennessey managed to grind out a road win last week to keep its perfect district record intact.

The Eagles put together a fourth quarter touchdown drive to put some distance between themselves and a stubborn Alva squad in an eventual 28-14 win.

The victory was Hennessey’s fourth straight as it moved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in District 2A-II-1.

The Eagles remain in a tie at the top of the district along with Community Christian and Cashion.

Alva scored on a 9-yard pass from Ashton Ferrell to Keaton Adair in the fourth quarter to pull within 21-14.

But Hennessey answered right back with a march down the field that saw Levi Ferrell score his fourth rushing touchdown of the game.

His plunge from 2 yards out put the Eagles back up by two scores.

It capped a game that saw Hennessey rush for 235 yards.

Ferrell got 146 of them on 28 carries.

Mario Lopez and Alex Gonzalez added 46 and 44 yards apiece.

“Our offensive line was really good and our backs ran it well,” said head coach Mark Cox.

Ferrell was also an efficient 10 of 14 passing for 130 yards.

Beau Vinson caught seven of those passes for 74 yards.

The Eagles took nearly 20 more snaps than the Alva offense.

The Goldbugs ran it for 167 and threw for 166.

A chunk of those passing yards took place in the first quarter when Alva’s Ferrell and Adair connected on their first TD, which was a 71-yard play.

“I thought our defense played well except when we gave up a couple of big plays,” Cox said.

The Goldbugs popped a couple more plays, but couldn’t score again until the fourth.

Hennessey held Alva to 5 of 14 on third-down plays and 0 for 5 on fourthdown plays. Lopez led the team with nine tackles, seven of them solo.

Jameson Ladwig and Hagen Copeland had eight apiece.

Esteban Blanco made the most of his three tackles as each one was for a loss.

Hennessey had eight for a loss as a team.

Alva’s first touchdown put it up 7-6.

The Eagles’ Ferrell had a 2-yard TD run to start the scoring prior to that.

He added a 1-yard score in the second quarter and another in the third as the lead grew to 20-7.

“Our kids fought well overall and found a way to win,” Cox said.

Hennessey returns home this Thursday night against Meeker, which is 0-6 on the season.

That will set up the Eagles’ two biggest games of the season - at Cashion in Week 8 and home against Community Christian in Week 9.
