Hennessey was denied in Chisholm territory twice in the fourth quarter and the Longhorns eventually pulled away for a 35-6 road win in Week 0.

Down by just two scores, Hennessey was stopped short on a 4thand-goal play from the 1 yard line about a minute into the final quarter.

About two minutes later, back on Chisholm’s side of the field, Eagle quarterback Levi Ferrell was picked off for the second time.

The Longhorns then scored twice in the final 7 minutes to make the score more lopsided than how the game was actually contested.

“Not getting any points out of that drive was a big deal,” said Hennessey coach Mark Cox of the Eagles being turned away at the doorstep of the goal line.

“It went downhill for us from there.”

Not being able to score, not so ironically, is what hurt the Eagles.

They had one more first down than Chisholm, ran the ball effectively, had just one more turnover and played a cleaner game as far as flags are concerned (Chisholm had 14 penalties for 130 yards to just six for 39 for the Eagles).

But Chisholm had scoring plays of 62, 25 and 51 yards through the air and more than twice as many passing yards overall.

“They made substantially more big plays offensively than we did,” Cox said. “Their skill kids are really talented and they made a lot of plays.”

Chisholm got five touchdowns from five different players.

The first saw Jase Hennigh haul in a long pass from Brayson Barnes in the first quarter.

Hennessey was able to answer as Ferrell busted loose for a 57-yard scoring run.

Chisholm maintained its scoring while Hennessey’s stalled.

Jonah Miller added a 69-yard rushing TD and Malachi Bennett a 5-yard run to make it 21-6 at halftime.

Wyatt Cordray and Manu Smolinski hauled in the long TD passes from Barnes after the Eagles’ last turnover.

Barnes was a modest 11 of 21 passing, but they covered 250 yards.

Ferrell was 16 of 35 for 112.

Beau Vinson caught seven passes for 54 yards and Brytan Gardner another six for 45.

Ferrell added 23 carries for 122 yards, but no other Eagle was able to establish any rushing momentum.

Gardner led the team with six tackles and also forced a fumble. Four other Eagles had four apiece.

Hennessey now travels to Thomas, which opened its season with a 28-14 loss to Mangum.
