Matousek, Ward among HHS runners to qualify for 3A state

Hennessey fell short of having a team qualify for the Class 3A state cross country meet, but will be sending a total of five runners.

Three of them are on the boys side, which did not have enough runners to field a full team.

Asher Ward, Chris Perez and Rogan Choate punched their tickets at Saturday’s regional at Oklahoma Bible Academy in Enid.

Ward placed 26th in the 5K race, finishing in 19:58.0.

Perez was 37th in 21:09.0 and Choate 43rd in 22:22.8.

Their finishes were good enough to make them among the seven top runners from non-qualifying teams.

Mauricio Gonzalez, who was 45th in 23:00.6, was just out of that grouping.

The Lady Eagles did have enough for a team and placed eighth overall.

Only the top five teams advance to state from a 3A regional.

Hennessey’s top two runners are moving on.

Sophomore Julianne Matousek placed third and Miranda Ortega 24th.

That placed them among the top seven individuals from teams that didn’t qualify.

Matousek medaled for her efforts and completed the two-mile course in 12:26.8. Ortega finished in 14:18.9.

Also for Hennessey, Jo-Hanna Matousek was 39th, Faith Martinez 57th, C’Anna Marin 58th and Lorelei Root 60th.

The 3A girls run at 10:30 a.m. at Carl Albert in the state meet. The 3A boys follow at 11 a.m.
