Much on the line for county football teams over next three weeks
Kingfisher and Cashion suffered strikingly similar football fates last Thursday night.
Both were dealt their fi rst district loss.
At home.
In overtime.
By the same score.
The Wildcats lost 34-28 to Millwood to fall to 3-1 in 2A-II-1.
Kingfisher, meanwhile, was beaten - you guessed it - 34-28 by Marlow to move to 3-1 in District 3A-1.
While disappointing, the losses are hardly catastrophic.
Both teams have a lot to play for and a district title is among those things still in play.
Also in the mix?
The Hennessey Eagles.
They dismantled Meeker 58-6 for their fi fth straight win of the season.
The Eagles are now 4-0 in 2A-II-1 and - like Cashion - will control their own fate as far as a district title is concerned.
Here’s a look at the three teams and what they’ve got left on their schedules and some of the myriad of possibilities surrounding their playoff fortunes:
Hennessey
Games left: at Cashion; Community Christian; at Newkirk
They’re one of just two teams in 2A-II-1 without a district loss with Community Christian being the other.
Cashion and Newkirk are both 3-1.
Hennessey plays those three teams in the final three weeks of the season, starting this week at Cashion.
Obviously if they win all three, the Eagles are district champs.
Losing all three could mean the Eagles are on the outside looking in if Millwood (2-2) runs the rest of its table, which is possible.
Win at least one game - and the Week 10 contest at Newkirk MIGHT be the easiest on paper - and the Eagles should be safe.
Win two of them and you’re likely playing at home in the first round.
Cashion
Games left: Hennessey; at Newkirk; Community Christian Despite last week’s loss, Cashion controls its own fate. If the Wildcats win out, they’ll be the district champs.
A loss muddies the waters and Cashion’s fate will depend on a variety of other games in the final weeks.
Two losses might mean the Wildcats miss out on the playoffs, especially if Millwood is able to win the rest of its games.
Kingfisher
Games left: at Purcell; Mount St. Mary; at McLoud Unlike their county brethren, the Jackets don’t control their own fate as far as winning a district title.
After last week’s outcomes - Marlow beating Kingfisher and North Rock Creek knocking off Mount St. Mary - that left all four of those teams with a 3-1 district record.
Kingfisher’s path to a district title? That’s if the Jackets and North Rock Creek win out. That means KHS would have to beat Mount St. Mary and North Rock Creek would have to knock off Marlow (both of those games are in Week 9).
In that scenario, KHS would win the district by virtue of the head-to-head win over NRC.
If the Jackets and Marlow win out, the Outlaws would claim the district championship and KHS would be second and host a first-round game.
A loss to - say - Mount St. Mary and the Jackets are likely looking at third or fourth in the district which means a trip to Kingston or Sulphur.
Two losses? Let’s not go there and hope the Jackets take care of business this week at Purcell.
