After a boisterous start to the game, Kingfisher’s bid to win a softball regional championship was far from stalling out, but there was definitely a bit of sputtering.

It went into overdrive again in the fifth inning and - now - the team is in for a long drive.

The Lady Jackets defeated Ada 5-2 at home on Friday to make even more history as they won a Class 4A regional championship for the first time in the program’s history. The victory gave Kingfi sher a sweep of the regional, which included wins of 10-4 against Cushing and 12-1 over Ada on the day before.

That put the Lady Jackets in prime position entering Friday. Ada would need two victories in order to take home the regional title.

Adlee Friesen said she had other plans as she led off the bottom of the first with a triple.

She eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Kinlee East and Lily Voth added an RBI single to give the Lady Jackets a solid start to the game.

But the KHS bats were a bit more quiet over the next few frames.

Ada was able to plate a run in the top of the third and was able to keep the score 2-1 until the fifth inning.

That’s when the bats got rowdy again.

East led it off with a single and scored on a double by Voth.

Abbie Jackson, Voth’s courtesy runner, found her way home when Addison Johnson delivered Kingfi sher’s third straight hit of the inning.

Friesen capped the scoring with her second extra- base hit of the game, a run-producing double for a 5-1 lead.

Voth took care of the rest.

The junior earned her third win of the regional as she pitched a complete game.

She gave up just four hits and one earned run while striking out three.

Voth was also one of four Lady Jackets to produce two hits at the plate as she drove in a pair of runs.

Friesen, East and Liliana Garramone joined her in earning a pair of hits.

Garramone caught the final out of the game in left field and was almost immediately speared by centerfi elder Kendall Farrar.

Those two joined the rest of the celebration on the infield as KHS advanced to the super regional.

That’s where the long drive comes in.

Once regionals are completed, the 16 coaches of the regional champs then rank those teams.

The top eight teams host a best-of-three super regional as No. 1 hosts No. 16, No. 2 hosts No. 15 and so on.

Kingfisher was tied with Byng at No. 13. Both received 69 points in the coaches’ rankings.

It was originally determined that Byng would get the No. 13 spot and KHS would drop to No. 14. With that, the Lady Jackets were told they were headed to No. 3 Plainview for a super regional.

However, that was later flipped.

The tie-breaker is determined by the teams’ winning percentage. KHS was 23-7, which has a win percentage of .767.

Byng is 24-13, which is .649.

That moved Kingfisher into the 13th spot where now the Lady Jackets will travel to play No. 4 Broken Bow.

That squad is also 23-7 and won District 6 this year.

It swept through Jay and Berryhill (twice) during its regional tournament, outscoring those foes 24-1 in three games.

KHS and Broken Bow played at noon and 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the bestof- three super regional.

If neither team swept those games, the deciding game is set for noon Thursday.
