TOs cost Cashion in OT loss

Cashion maybe could have overcome four turnovers - and almost did.

A fifth was too much. Millwood’s London Lewis connected with Josiah Hardy for a 5-yard touchdown to lift the Falcons to a 34-28 overtime victory on Thursday night.

The touchdown came on Millwood’s overtime try after Cashion’s Kellen Smith fumbled it over on the Wildcats’ initial possession.

It was Cashion’s fifth turnover of the contest: two fumbles and three interceptions.

That played at least a part in Cashion playing from behind much of the night.

Carter Ray gave the Falcons their first lead with a 26-yard run in the first quarter before Smith knotted it up with a 40-yard scoring scamper of his own.

But Millwood made the next two strikes.

Hardy made it 14-7 with his 23-yard run in the first quarter and then Maquis Vick made it a two-score game with a 2-yard run in the second.

The lead stuck until halftime before Cashion roared back.

Smith scored on runs of 33 yards in the third quarter and 22 yards in the fourth to tie the game up.

Millwood countered with Hardy’s 8-yard TD scamper to put the Falcons back on top 28-21.

Smith again led Cashion down the field.

The Wildcats faced a 4th and 7 at the Millwood 37 with just over 5:00 remaining when he scampered for 33 yards.

Grayson Davis found the end zone a couple snaps later from 5 yards out and the game was again tied.

Both teams had a chance before the end of regulation, but couldn’t score.

Smith was used heavily as he ran it 25 times for 199 yards and three TDs.

He also was 10 of 19 through the air for 74 yards.

Defensively, the senior led the way with 12 tackles while Gavin Layton added eight.

Hank Brown contributed 48 rushing yards and Davis 39.

The Wildcats ran for 286 and averaged 6.4 yards a carry.

Millwood had 245 on the ground and 126 through the air, but also ended up plusfour in the turnover battle.

The loss knocked Cashion from the ranks of the unbeaten in District 2AII- 1.

The Wildcats are now 3-1 in the district and 4-3 overall.

Millwood, which had

The win solidified the Falcons’ playoff chances.

Cashion, almost assuredly in the playoffs as well, now must jockey harder for position.

Up next is a home date with Hennessey on Friday night. The Eagles and Community Christian - Cashion’s Week 10 foe - are both 4-0 in the district. Cashion also has a Week 9 date with Newkirk, which currently sits at 3-1 in the district as well.
