The funeral for Patricia Ortega Maldonado, 40, was Thursday, Jan. 30, at Cristo Rey Baptist Church in Hennessey. It was officiated by Pastor Jairo Carmona and Pastor Nicholas Cornejo. Burial followed at Hennessey Cemetery under the direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home.

KGSA promising renewed focus in 2020

Starla Wittrock has been helping coach junior high softball at Kingfisher for three years now. Once she started, it didn’t take her long to realize the softball players coming into the program weren’t fundamentally ready to compete at a higher level.

Royal night for KHS wrestling

The Kingfisher High School wrestling program squeezed a lot into two hours Tuesday at the APB. Seniors were honored, the homecoming captain and queen were announced, they honored assistant coach Stan Blundell on his 50th birthday and junior high and high school duals were contested.

Lafferty earns XC honor from NFHS

Kingfisher High School’s Kerri Lafferty is still raking in honors for the 2018 cross country season. It was announced last month that Lafferty was named the 2018-19 Oklahoma Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High Schools Coaches Association.

Crescent stuns Lady Warriors in TRC road game

Crescent denied Okarche’s bid for an unbeaten record in Three Rivers Conference games. The Lady Tigers went on the road Tuesday and handed Okarche a 38-35 defeat. The loss dropped Okarche to 5-1 in conference games with one more still to play (at Cashion on Feb. 11).

OSSAA announces Class A & B basketball playoff assignments

The OSSAA last week announced basketball playoff assignments for Classes A and B. In Kingfisher County, those assignments affected Okarche, Dover and Lomega. In Class A, Okarche will host a district tournament, but will head southeast for the remainder of the playoffs.

Leaving a Legacy

Richard Simunek, Hennessey preservationist and town board member, announced a $1.35 million matching gift to the town for the library, history center and “old school gym” located on Hennessey’s Main Street. The gift is on behalf of Simunek and his late wife, Zorita Zevely Simunek, who died in 2012.

Walter wins OPA award

Times & Free Press contributor Barb Walter recently won the Oklahoma Press Association’s column-writing contest with her column entitled “It was time,” published in November in this newspaper.

Where Credit Is Due

Individuals and businesses can now make donations on behalf of Kingfisher Public Schools and earn up to a 75% credit on their 2020 state income taxes.

Same player, new name: Encana now Ovintiv

Encana’s corporate relocation and rebranding announced in October became official on Monday when the company announced it is now domiciled in the U.S. and has adopted the new name Ovintiv Inc.
