Big win for Big D
If Dover is going to contend for a state championship this fall, chances are Leedey will factor into those chances.
Saturday proved Dover is well prepared this season.
The Bison twice denied Dover last season, knocking the Longhorns out in the quarterfinals of the Class B state tournament both in the fall and the spring.
When the teams squared off again Saturday in the final game of the Dover Baseball Festival, the Bison turned to Dray Boatman.
The Leedey lefthander was good…just not as good as Casen Buck.
Dover’s senior took a no-hitter into the final frame, eventually saw the go-ahead run reach scoring position, but struck out the final batter of the game for a 3-2 Dover victory.
The win capped a 3-0 run for the Longhorns in the two-day festival and pushed their overall mark to 5-0.
Buck was unhittable through the first six innings as he faced just 20 batters, two more than the minimum, as he walked a batter in both the second and sixth innings.
Meanwhile, Dover was piecing together some runs against Boatman.
Sandler Greb slapped a twoout double in the first inning to score Buck, who led off with his own double.
Buck scored again in the third when he reached on an error and crossed home on Trypp Lack’s single.
Boatman kept Dover’s bats mostly quiet until the bottom of the sixth when Daxx Compton provided some insurance with a solo home run.
It proved to be valuable insurance.
Leedey got just its third base runner of the game to lead off the seventh as Buck issued his third base on balls. That was followed by Wyatt McIntyre breaking up the no-hitter with a single. Buck got a fly out and ground out from the next two batters, but the latter did bring home a run to make it 3-1. The Bison then got their second hit and run on an RBI single off the bat of Slade Clark. That was followed by a Dover error and, soon, runners were at second and third base. But Buck answered the call and sat down the final batter looking on strikes to grab the win. All told, Buck struck out nine batters, walked three and gave up two hits. Boatman surrendered six hits over six innings. He struck out 11 batters and walked only one.
Buck and Ivan Ruiz both had two hits for the Longhorns.
They also had a bit of drama in their nightcap game Friday.
After surrendering four runs in the top half of the inning, Dover plated four of its own in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 9-7 victory over Asher.
The back-and-forth affair with Asher came after Dover run-ruled Vici 10-0 in three innings in its festival opener.
The Longhorns scored eight runs in the first inning against Vici and were never threatened.
Lack drove in four runs and Sloan Merrill two more.
Brok Cooper was 2 for 2 with a pair of runs scored.
Greb gave up just one hit and struck out three over his three innings of work.
The Asher game wasn’t as one-sided and the Indians took the early lead when Easton Welch homered off Lack with two outs in the top of the first.
Dover scored twice in the bottom half to start the tug of war.
Asher took a 3-2 lead in the second before Dover reclaimed a 5-3 advantage in the third thanks to a trio of Asher errors.
It stayed that way until the sixth when Welch started a rally with a leadoff double. An error, a walk and hit batter later, Lack made way for Buck on the mound.
Two more Dover errors in the inning saw Asher take a 7-5 lead.
Compton brought Dover within 7-6 with an RBI double in the sixth, his third hit of the game.
That started the Dover barrage as the Longhorns scored three more runs on just one hit.
Buck then shut down the Indians in the seventh as he struck out the side in order.
