With the memory of a year ago still fresh on their minds, the Kingfisher Yellowjackets made sure history didn’t repeat itself. KHS is headed to the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament for a fifth consecutive year after dismantling No. 8 Holland Hall 71-40 last Friday at Enid High School.

It’s not easy for the Lomega girls basketball team to make history. The program practically owns all of it in Oklahoma.

The Lomega Lady Raiders continued to add to their storied legacy Saturday when they defeated Kiowa 67-60 in the Class B state championship at State Fair Arena. It was the program’s 15th state championship, four more than any other girls program in Oklahoma.

Kevin Lewallen saw something in Darcy Roberts as a freshman last season when his Lomega Lady Raiders were making a march to a state championship. “She went out there and decided to become one of the best players in Class B,” Lewallen said a year ago.

If it’s the state tournament and Lomega needs a big shot, Hensley Eaton has a knack for delivering. This time it wasn’t late in the game or down the stretch, rather less than halfway through the first quarter of the Lady Raiders’ Class B semifinal Thursday night against No. 3 Varnum.

Missed chances meant missed shots. And that meant the end of the road for the Cashion Lady Wildcats. Minco used a big second half Thursday to surge past Cashion and take home a 46-37 victory from their Class 2A area consolation quarterfinal in Chickasha.

From the start, it didn’t appear it would be Lomega’s day. And it wasn’t. The Raiders saw their season come to an end Wednesday as they fell prey to Cyril 74-56 in the Class B quarterfinals at State Fair Arena.

Kingfisher had one sizable disadvantage against Perkins-Tryon. Just that...size. The larger Lady Demons stymied the Kingfisher offense much of Thursday afternoon and eliminated the Lady Jackets 44-32 in their Class 4A area consolation quarterfinal at Enid High School.
