Kingfisher High School will have a new wrestling coach for the first time in more than three decades when it takes to the mats next winter. The board of education on Monday unanimously approved Bryan Dutton as that person.

Kingfisher’s Matthew Stone and Bijan Cortes were selected to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State basketball team last week. The duo will compete for the Large West (Classes 4A-6A) when it plays the Large East selections July 29 in the Tulsa area.

In most cases, 16 runs off 15 hits and eight opponent errors would be more than enough for Kingfisher to comfortably win a baseball game. Last Saturday was the exception.

The 2019 Kingfisher High School basketball team was ridiculously loaded. On top of a lockdown defender and a solid 3-point shooter in Reece Lafferty, the team had what turned out to be two Division I and two Division II signees in the starting lineup.

Although the 62 wooden children gathered on the Kingfisher County Courthouse lawn this month are smiling, they carry a serious message. They represent the 62 county children who were confirmed to be abused or neglected in 2019 by the county Department of Human Services child welfare division.

Tuesday is the last day to cast ballots in municipal and school board races across the county. Voters who did not participate in early voting at the county courthouse Thursday and Friday or mail-in absentee voting will cast ballots at their regular polling places from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Local businessman Joe Garrison resigned from the Hennessey Board of Education during its noon meeting last Wednesday. The board “reluctantly” accepted his resignation and Garrison was given a standing ovation for his service to the school and community.

Kingfisher residents now have even more reason to see Matt Damon’s Oklahoma-based film Stillwater, slated for release this summer.

Another district sweep is in the bag for the Kingfisher baseball team. The Jackets beat Purcell 9-0 on Monday at Homier Field, then brought home an 8-3 victory on Tuesday. KHS is 6-0 in District 4A-1 games thus far.
