Coin flip sends Cashion to Pawhuska

Tails never fails. Until it does. With the OSSAA opting this season to not hold football semifinals at neutral sites, this week’s Class A semifinal host came down to a coin flip between Cashion and Pawhuska. Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford got to call the toss at 10 a.m. Saturday. He called tails.

Cashion used a balancing act to get back into the state semifinals. The Wildcats ran and threw it effectively last Friday in taking apart Woodland 41-22 in a Class A quarterfinal at Maxon Field.

KHS girls top seed in Woodward

Kingfisher’s girls basketball team is the top seed in this weekend’s Compass Athletics Winter Basketball Classic in Woodward. The Lady Jackets are flying solo this week as the Kingfisher boys will be playing later this month in the Tournament of Champions in Tulsa. KHS plays Woodward JV at 4 p.m.

KHS boys, girls dominate Elgin on the road

Kingfisher and Elgin shot the exact same percentage in their girls basketball game last Friday. But that was about the only similar stat in the Lady Jackets’ 64-30 road win. While both KHS and the Lady Owls were 33.3 percent from the field, the Lady Jackets shot it 30 more times.

Although surprised by Gov. Kevin Stitt’s action to replace him on the state board of education, Kingfisher oilman and municipal judge Kurt Bollenbach said he harbors no ill will about last week’s decision.

Roger Phillips, former mayor, dies at 82

Former Kingfisher Mayor Roger Phillips, 82, died Dec. 2, 2020 in Kingfisher. A resident of Kingfisher since 1979, he came here with his young family as a telephone cable installer for Stake Construction Co. and made this his permanent home.

Misdemeanor charge filed against coach

The Kingfisher football coach who resigned his duties in August after an alleged incident at practice pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge relating to the investigation.
