Depth of 4A Woodward too much in 44-34 win

Woodwardhadits“Ace” in the hole Thursday.

Eventually it was too much for Cashion.

The Class 4A Boomers picked up their first win of the season as they outlasted Cashion 44-34 on the road.

“I thought we played OK,” said Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford. “But in the end, they had a lot more depth than us and we wore down a little bit.”

Cashion trailed by just one point entering the fourth and scored a pair of last-quarter TDs.

However, Woodward’s Ace Long scored three of his four rushing touchdowns in the final frame to keep the Boomers ahead.

Long had TD runs of 23, 9 and 49 yards in the final 12 minutes.

The latter was after Cashion had pulled within three points on Cooper Frazee’s second touchdown run of the game.

“The 25 to 30 guys they played just outlasted the 13 we were playing,” Shackelford said.

Long also had a 3-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

All told, he rushed 29 times for 206 yards.

As a team, the Boomers ran for 282 yards and added another 147 through the air.

Cashion never could get its ground game going.

Frazee netted 25 yards on 10 carries, but as a team the Wildcats were held to minus-4 yards.

Chance Acord was sacked multiple times, which led to minus-30 yards.

Acord was solid through the air, however.

He was 16 of 21 for 297 yards and two scores.

Max Brown, who caught a 22-yard touchdown, hauled in nine passes for 176 yards.

Cashion struck first… and twice.

Frazee ran it in from 2 yards and Acord found Max Higdon for a 43-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Woodward came back to score twice to tie it, but Cashion led 21-14 at the half after Brown’s TD catch.

The Boomers methodically took control over the final two quarters.

Kai Gilbert led the Cashion defense with 10 tackles. Camden Maroney added nine.

Cashion is now 3-4 overall.

The Wildcats return to District A-3 play at Hinton on Friday in what is an important matchup for the Wildcats’ playoff hopes.

Shackelford said, despite the loss, he likes where his team is headed.

“I told the team after the game that I think we’re really close to putting it all together,” he said.
