Tremendous defense down the stretch and some sharp-shooting from a senior helped Cashion get perhaps its best win of the season.

The Lady Wildcats allowed just three points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Class 3A’s third-ranked Alva 52-40 Friday in the Skordle Festival in Enid.

The outcome snapped a six-game win streak for the Ladybugs while Cashion won its third straight.

Playing at the Stride Bank Center as part of the threeday, 30-game festival, Cashion got out to a 13-8 lead and still maintained a four-point lead at halftime.

The Lady Wildcats pushed their lead to 10 points with a 20-point third quarter.

Lauren Jenkins played a big part.

The senior guard was 4 of 7 from 3-point range for the game and led all scorers with 21 points.

But it was the defense that sealed the deal as Cashion shut down Alva in the fourth quarter.

Cashion also got eight points from Reese Williams while Abby Hobgood and Megan Shafer scored seven apiece.

Shafer led the team on Saturday as Cashion traveled even further north to beat Pond Creek-Hunter 52-28.

The game was originally scheduled earlier this month, but had to be postponed due to weather.

Cashion got up 20-10 in the first quarter and was never truly challenged.

Shafer led all scorers with 18 points.

Jenkins chipped in 13 more as Cashion won its third straight and improved to 13-4.

Wildcats lose pair of close games

The Cashion boys suffered a pair of narrow losses over the weekend to push their losing streak to five games.

A late surge fell short Friday as the Wildcats were downed 56-50 by Alva in the Skordle Festival at Enid’s Stride Bank Center.

Alva staked an early eight-point lead and maintained a nine-point lead entering the fourth.

Cashion was able to cut its deficit to four points with under 20 seconds left and even stole an inbounds pass to regain possession.

But Alva blocked two consecutive shots in the paint to derail Cashion’s comeback.

Drake Woody paced Cashion with 16 points. Anthony Wilburn added eight.

The Wildcats made the trip to Pond Creek-Hunter on Saturday and were dealt a 59-54 defeat.

The Wildcats made nine 3-pointers in the first half and built up a 35-27 lead.

PC-H held them to just six points in the third quarter and outscored Cashion 32-19 overall in the second half.

For the game, Cashion was 14 of 35 from 3-point range.

Wilburn made six of those treys for all 18 of his points.

Woody Scored 17 and also had four steals.

The losses dropped Cashion to 7-10 on the season.
