Cashion girls knock off Garber to stay unbeaten

Watch out for Cashion.

The Lady Wildcats sent official notice Saturday when they downed previously-unbeaten Garber 44-37 to win the NextEra Energy Resources Invitational championship.

“Defense,” said Cashion coach Andrea Taylor about what led her team to the title.

She’s right. The 37 points was the most surrendered by Cashion in the tournament.

In the three wins, Cashion gave up an average of just over 25 points a contest.

The third quarter was a great example. After taking a 21-20 halftime lead, Cashion started the second half with a 12-4 run.

Garber, ranked ninth in Class A, couldn’t mount the comeback as Cashion notched seven steals in the second half.

“That really helped us pull away,” Taylor said.

Another big factor for Cashion’s 5-0 start is Taylor doesn’t know from where - better yet, from whom - her production is going to be delivered.

On Saturday, Reese Williams scored 15 points to lead the team.

In Friday’s 39-33 win over Hooker in the semifinals, one that saw Cashion outscore the Lady Bulldogs 16-7 in the fourth, it was a balanced attack.

Lauren Jenkins scored nine while Addison McCracken and Megan Shafer had eight apiece.

Jenkins added 10 against Garber while Madison Westerhoff chipped in eight points.

“We have an ability to score from all five positions, which is big for us,” Taylor said.
