Saturday marked the beginning of what is known as the “dead period” for junior high and high school sports in Oklahoma.

Voted in by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association board of directors in 2019, the dead period essentially prohibits any practices or summer games by member school coaches and athletes.

It annually stretches from the weekend before July 4 to the weekend after.

This year, that is July 2-10.

During that time, secondary-level students (grades 7-12) cannot use a member school’s athletic facilities.

Member school coaches, assistant coaches and sponsors may not have any contact with students during the time frame for the purpose of coaching, training or instructing.

The policy only relates to athletics governed by the OSSAA.

It doesn’t affect other non-athletic activities such as music, speech and debate or academic bowl.

Coaches and/or athletes who previously qualified for a national level tour nament may participate in that event during the dead period without penalty.
