Nearly every Kingfisher County basketball team was playing in a tournament last week, the first of three major tournament weeks of the season.

Two did not: The Kingfi sher boys and Okarche girls.

That’s because they were selected last year to play in this year’s Tournament of Champions, which is hosted by Tulsa Public Schools.

This year’s invitation- only tournament, the 57th version of it, will be played Dec. 28-30 at the BOK Center in downtown Tulsa.

The boys bracket features a field that includes four reigning state champions, including the Yellowjackets.

KHS will take on Bartlesville in the opening round at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28.

While the Bruins didn’t have much team success a year ago, they do feature one of the nation’s most highly-ranked players in combo guard David Castillo.

A junior, Castillo already boasts offers from every in-state school as well as the likes of Kansas, Texas, Texas Tech, Illinois, Florida and more.

KHS and Bartlesville are on the same side of the bracket as Tulsa Memorial (5A champs) and Roff (B runner-up).

The bottom half includes Edmond North (6A champs) vs. Crossings Christian (4A semifinals) and Union (6A) vs. Dale (2A champs).

The girls bracket features one returning state champion.

Okarche is one of four teams that reached their respective state semifinals last season.

The Lady Warriors did so in Class A.

They will play 6A state runner-up Bixby in the opening round at 7 p.m. on Dec. 28 (right after the KHS boys game).

Also on that side of the bracket are Holland Hall (4A semifinals) vs. Kiefer (3A).

The other side pits Norman (6A) and Lincoln Christian (3A semifinals) and Sapulpa (5A semifinals) vs. Pocola (2A champs).
