Two solid rounds on Monday have the Kingfisher High School boys golf team poised for a strong finish to their season.

The Yellowjackets posted scores of 335 and 333 on the opening day of the Class 4A state tournament at Boiling Springs Golf Course in Woodward.

That had them in fifth place entering the final 18 holes on Tuesday (after press time), but the 668 total was just 12 strokes behind second-place teams Cascia Hall and Holland Hall.

Perkins-Tryon was sitting in fourth with a 664.

“I’d like to see us really finish strong and move up on that list,” coach Chris Combs said Monday night. “But it’s going to take some work. We’re going to have to play well.”

Heritage Hall was the runaway leader with a 618.

The first round saw Blake Hill and Cash Slezickey pace the Jackets.

Both shot 81s on their first 18 holes.

Tristun Burnham carded an 85 while KHS also counted Paytun Burnham’s 88.

Jax Sternberger fired a 92.

Sternberger and Tristun Burnham improved with their next round.

Burnham came back with a 76 while Sternberger delivered an 88.

Hill remained consistent with an 82 and Slezickey shot an 87. Paytun Burnham carded a 97 in his second round.
