Hennessey’s defense kept it in the district opener much of the night against Perry.

It just couldn’t hold up all night.

The Maroons opened up a slim halftime lead to pull away in the second half for a 34-13 win last Friday night in Hennessey.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in District 2A-1.

Perry is 2-2 and 1-0. The Maroons managed only one first-half score, a 4-yard run by Chance Davis late in the first quarter.

However, Hennessey couldn’t match it and eventually trailed 21-0 before finding the end zone.

That was a one-play drive as Sebastian Gonzalez found Weston Smith for an 80-yard touchdown with 2:42 to play in the third quarter.

But Perry answered early in the fourth and the teams traded touchdowns the rest of the night.

Gonzalez had his best passing game of the season.

The junior was 13 of 18 for 245 yards and two touchdowns.

Smith caught three passes for 104 yards.

Seth Simunek’s six receptions tallied him 98 yards. He had a 17-yard touchdown in the fourth.

However, Hennessey’s running game was statistically non-existent.

The Eagles’ 28 rushing attempts netted zero yards.

The Maroons were able to bottle up Keigen Crites as his 14 carries resulted in eight net yards.

Hennessey also lost two fumbles.

While Perry only attempted 10 passes and threw for 42 yards, the Maroons ran for 353.

They averaged 8.2 per carry.

Caden Hall led the way with 209 yards and three touchdowns on 24 attempts.

Nykolaus Snyder had 10 tackles and a sack for the Hennessey defense.

Crites added eight while Smith also intercepted a pass.

The Eagles host Newkirk (0-4, 0-1) this Friday night.
