Spoiler alert: Sometimes your ‘Safe Place’ is where you make it

The stiff winds during Monday night’s storms had nothing on my stiff neck and back caused by getting into my Safe Place that night. When I heard the storm siren over the hard rain and TV weather guy I knew I shouldn’t have turned down the neighbor’s storm cellar invitation.

Judy Mae Martinez died peacefully at her home Monday, May 13, 2019, in Fort Gibson, at the age of 66. Judy was born on April 27, 1953, in Atoka. She married John Paul Martinez, her Kingfisher Community Hospital co-worker, in 1979. Over their 40-year marriage, the couple raised three children.

Peggy K. Gleichman passed away peacefully with her husband at her side on March 7, 2019, at the age of 84. Peggy was born on April 29, 1935, to Robert and Maria Weebe in Manhattan, N.Y. Peggy is survived by her loving husband, Donald W. Gleichman of 63 1/2 years. They were married Dec.

Lankford rep updates Rotary

Tanner Roberts, right, field representative for U.S. Senator James Lankford, was the guest speaker at a recent Kingfisher Rotary Club meeting. Roberts told of Lankford’s activities during the current session of the U.S. Senate and also answered questions from Rotarians and guests.

CHS provides safety training throughout area

CHS Okarche employees spent multiple days from April 25 through May 1 providing safety training in various communities. Two employees were in Watonga April 25 teaching grain safety at the Progressive Ag Safety Day. An estimated 170 fourth graders from the area attended the event.

Been There, Done That

Work done to reduce the impact of flooding on Kingfisher and surrounding area residents since the massive 500-year flood in 2007 are expected to be put to the test this week. Overnight downpours pushed Kingfisher Creek and Uncle John Creek, which merge in Kingfisher, to flood stage Tuesday morning.

County postpones road bids

Kingfisher County commissioners put off action on two of the three bids for resurfacing sections of county roads at their meeting Monday.District 1 Commissioner Jeff Moss and District 3 Commissioner Heath Dobrovolny both said they wanted more time to study the bids, which were opened a week earlier.

Memorial Day program nears; Storm to speak

Charles Storm, commander for the Keith Lowry-Henry Ellyson Post No. 5 American Legion, will serve as speaker for the post’s annual Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the Kingfisher Cemetery.
